Born in 1952 in Veendam (Groningen); attended Grammar school, specialising in exact sciences

1971 to 1979 - Pharmacy degree at the University of Leiden.

1976 - One of the founders of Refarma, a student association for pharmacy students.

1977 - Six-month period in Montpellier (France). Spent his time there initiating research among pharmacy students on attitudes towards the future pharmacist's profession.

1978 - Continuation of studies from Montpellier and graduation project I: research among students in Leiden (NL), Cardiff (GB) and Frankfurt (D) in the framework of mutual recognition of pharmacist's qualifications in the EU.

1978 - Graduation project II: ‘Consumption of anti-bacterial agents in Rotterdam, 1975'. In the framework of the WHO Drug Utilization Research Group.

1982 - Establishment of the stichting Ortho Institute foundation, of which he became director.

1983 - First issue of the ORTHOmoleculair Magazine published.

1984 - Pharmacist's examination at the University of Amsterdam.

1985 - First meeting with two-times Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling.

1985 to 1989 - Editor-in-chief of German professional journal Orthomolekular.

1987 - Establishment of the Association for the Promotion of Orthomolecular Medicine (MBOG); first president until 1997.

1988 to 1998 - Organiser of courses on orthomolecular medicine.

1992 - Attended reception for the 20th anniversary of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, Palo Alto (VS).

1993 - Establishment of the publishing organisation Ortho Communications & Science BV, of which he became director.

1993 - First issue of the magazine Fit met Voeding published.

1994 - First edition of Het Gouden Boekje voor de Gezondheid (The Golden Book of Health). To become a bestseller.

1998 - Winner of the Orthomolecular Trophy 1998.

1999 to 2009 - President of the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM, based in Toronto).

1999 - Launch of the digital ORTHO library.

2002 - The book Honger naar geweld (Hunger for violence) published. This book led to the establishment of studies involving food supplements in Dutch prisons.

2002 to present - Member of the editorial board of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine.

2004 - Graduation as Doctor of Medicine at the University of Maastricht based on a population screening programme into risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

2004 to 2007 - Member of the Board of Governors of the International Schizophrenia Foundation.

2004 - First edition of Het Gouden Boekje voor het Hart (The Golden Book of the Heart).

2005 - First edition of Het Gouden Boekje voor de Gewrichten (The Golden Book of Joints).

2005 - Presented with Orthomolecular Doctor of the Year Award by the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine.

2006 - Day chairman during the first Nutrition & Psyche conference, an initiative of ORTHOmoleculair Magazine.

2008 - First edition of the book Nieuw licht op vitamine D en chronische ziekten (A new light on vitamin D and chronic illness).

2008 - (First) honorary member of the MBOG.

2010 - Publication of the Fit met Voeding Kookboek (Fit through Nutrition Cookery Book) by Jac. van Dongen and Gert Schuitemaker.

2010 - Publication of the book Astaxanthine, de Algen Antioxidant (Astaxanthin, the Algal antioxidant).

2011 - Inducted in the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM) Hall of Fame.

2012 - Publication of the book Fit met Voedingssupplementen. Neem uw gezondheid in eigen hand.
